I helped a client consolidate multiple sales funnels by storing and retrieving UTM parameters using cookies and custom code. The data was captured in Typeform and sent to Slack via Zapier, providing the sales team with real-time insights. This simplified our funnels and improved tracking.

The Problem

A client approached me with a messy challenge:

He had separate sales funnels for each traffic source (Google, Facebook, email, etc.) so they could have precise tracking. Managing them was becoming a nightmare though. Every time a change was made to one funnel, we had to duplicate that change in every other funnel. And every time a new traffic source was added, we had to create another funnel.

He needed a solution that:

  • Consolidated funnels into a single, streamlined process

  • Tracked UTM parameters across multiple pages

  • Captured the traffic source automatically in Typeform

  • Sent real-time notifications to his Slack team for better visibility

The Solution

To solve the issue, I developed a system using UTM tracking, cookies, Google Tag Manager, and custom code.

Here’s how it worked:

  1. Set up UTM parameters and stored them as cookies on the opt-in page using Google Tag Manager.

  1. Used custom code to take the UTM data from cookies, and add it back into the URL two pages later, for Step #3.

  1. Configured Typeform to capture the UTMs from the URL using hidden fields, so each application form included the original traffic source.

  1. Integrated Zapier to send the captured UTM data to Slack in real-time, so the sales team could see exactly which source generated the lead.
